Deep engraving doesn't necessarily mean "hogging" out a lot of material in order to achieve a certain depth. Often deep engraving is associated with small intricate markings. The firearm industry is a good example of this because the ATF actually mandates that gun manufacturers maintain a particular depth of engraving for serial numbers.
